Seedling Bur x Gambel Oak: Twisted Tree

Quercus macrocarpa x gambelii

Seed source: Akiva Silver, Twisted Tree Farm

Akiva's description:

Bears huge crops medium size acorns at a young age. Very prolific and very low tannin. These are the easiest of all the acorns we have tried leaching. It usually only requires one or two changes of hot water to remove tannins.

Additional description:

Height 30-40'. Cross pollinates with bur oak and itself. Having 2 plants helps with the overlap of flowering and fertility plus yields. Prefers sandy, sandy loam; not for wet soils. Zone 4-9. Despite not being the fastest growing oak, it is the most precocious hybrid bearing acorns on small trees. Usually has low tannin in its acorns making it suitable for acorn flour. This is the cross to use for precocity.
